Bird wallpaper – the good, the bad and the ugly

    by  • July 29, 2010 • Beautiful boudoirs • 4 Comments

It’s official, I’m completely torn by bird wallpapers. In some ways I find them adorable and the perfect finishing touch to a country-style scheme – especially a pretty little guest bedroom. However, in other ways I find them … well … quite frightening actually. The antique bird or retro bird ‘look’ just isn’t for me.

Here’s how far by bird wallpaper love goes…

The good - cute, country and destined for a guest bedroom, this simple bird wallpaper adds a welcoming touch.

The bad – hmmmmmm, a retro bird feature wall isn’t for me, but I’d certainly give this Seventies-inspired print marks for an eye-catching focal point.

The ugly – this is decorating hell for me. Too many birds, too many antiques, I would feel like I was on a period drama set, not my actual living room!

Here’s a sneak peak at the new range (is it wrong that I actually like the mix of samples feature wall??)

The Room I envy' by Melanie Adams

I love looking for the latest wallpaper trends and decorating tips, that’s why I asked wallpaper guru Melanie Adams founder of Wallpaperdirect, if she would kindly chat to me about the room she envies most at the moment.

“This room is fantastic – it hits all the marks for making a living room both homely, yet stylish. The designer has chosen the courageous route of papering all four walls with the fantastic Tahiti wall paper from Albany East. This design is perfect as it is both brave and bold but with a neutral background.

To accentuate the warm, deep purples on the walls, they have chosen the perfect accessories including matching cushions, curtains and floral décor. I also absolutely adore the exposed brick fireplace which is a great feature in the room bringing a bit of texture and feeling.

Using a mix of furniture styles is also very fashionable right now, and is something that many homes are incorporating, you just need to make sure that they compliment each other, which these clearly do.

All in all, this room is very much on trend, in terms of design and wallpaper, for 2010.”

Longing for exposed bricks in the bedroom? Get the next best thing with a special-effect wallpaper like this one from Wallpaperdirect. Best keep it to one wall though, unless your going for the ‘asylum-style’ decorating look!

Foam stamps are back in fashion, so it’s time to get printing! Use simple designs from Papermaze to make panels … but practise first, there’s nothing more embarrassing than someone commenting on your child’s painting skills.

    Friday's Fetish: fresh spring florals

    by  • March 12, 2010 • Cool kitchens, Stylish living • 0 Comments

Im saying goodbye to winter, and I don’t care how frosty my fingers are, or how I appreciate even a second-long glimspe of sunshine, it’s time to start a new season afresh!

Spring florals look just as good indoors as out, and are really easy to live with. Don’t go too crazy though. Decide on a feature wallpaper, a window treatment or furniture fabric, then pick out one or two colours from the pattern and use these as accents in your room. Hey presto!

This fruity living room is certainly eye-popping. I love how the blooms climb up the walls and how the key colours stand out.

Roomenvy - green and blue kitchen-diner

This is a softer look, and perhaps a bit easier to live with, the washed-out blue and green floral fabrics give this kitchen-diner a really fresh feel.

    Wishing for a 'snow day'!

    by  • January 5, 2010 • Stylish living • 2 Comments

I know the London transport system will see to it that I get to work safely tomorrow, but if it doesn’t, this living room is where I’ll be (or be wishing I was).

Inspired by falling leaves, first frosts (if only it knew …) and shiny conkers, this woodland living room is super cosy – and you don’t have to sacrifice the feeling in your toes to experience it.

Here’s how to get the look

    1) Invest in a leather piece like this footstool – it’ll look good for decades!

    2) Go fo leafy motifs like a statement wallpiece or a rustic wallpaper design.

    3) Snuggle up with plenty of cushions and throw in tweed and cable-knit fabrics.

    4) Add quirky touches, like a chunky wooden cuckoo clock (race you to Purves & Purves).

    5) Hot chocolate. Movies. Chunky socks. The rest is history.
