I’ll let you ponder which song contains these lyrics. But aren’t they just true? Half the pleasure in reading 25 Beautiful Homes is looking at gorgeous interiors and fantasising. Before having kids, me and my wife took great pride in restoring our succession of Victorian houses to an updated version of their original state. We’d come home from work, grab a bite to eat and get straight on with the tasks in hand. This could be filling the gaps in the old floorboards with strips of paper to stop the draughts coming up between them (it actually works!), or tearing off the woodchip (with the help of a steamer) or rag-rolling the walls to create an effect to marvel at (or so we thought at the time…). I was clearing out the garage at the weekend and unearthed a long-lost box of photos of our marbled wall, which seemed perfect then – especially as it hid sticky fingerprints and ‘accidental’ doodles – but doesn’t look that great now. Now the boys are grown up, I’m back to dreaming about clean lines and pale palettes and a lovely calm mood, and the room shown embodies that. Mind you, I think it’s a pipe dream – give it 10 more years and I’ll be doddering around the place in muddy shoes, spilling cups of tea, with not enough energy to keep the place up to scratch and freshly painted. But there’s nothing wrong in putting your dreams into words – it’s called Happy Talk.
