    Home office organisation tips

    by  • July 26, 2010 • Best of the rest • 1 Comment

Organising your home office is just SO easy when you have BEAUTIFUL accessories and pretty country-style finishing touches to complete the look – and that’s EXACTLY how I’d justify (to a boyfriend, husband … or to HSBC) spending money on a study clear of clutter!

Country Homes & Interiors editor, Rhoda Parry, has some GREAT ways to keep your paperwork in check, your events calendar up to date, oh and how to create a home office that’s not too … ‘officey’ … After all, you’re gonna have to have somewhere to retreat to when your other half sees the shopping bill!

    Cosy living room decorating ideas!

    by  • July 26, 2010 • Stylish living • 2 Comments

I know it’s “summer” and all, but that didn’t stop the “warm summer nights” turning my feet into ice blocks – it’s worse when you least expect it! Anyway, last week I was chatting to Country Homes and Interiors editor, Rhoda Parry, about creating a cosy living room and it couldn’t have come at a better time …. between my frost-bitten feet and my decision to wear a short-sleeved top to work!

    Enjoy!

    Friday's Fetish: Indigo blue

by  • July 23, 2010 • Beautiful boudoirs, Best of the rest, Desirable dining • 2 Comments

Love … it’s just … LOVE! Indigo is one of my favourite colours anyway, but to see country-style decorating schemes brightened up with this satisfying shade of blue was almost too much for my withered Friday body to handle!

I love how it can be used to add magic to soft furnishings, table tops and even the walls.

Climb into a cooooool bluuuuuuuue bed…

I spend hours deciding which of these indigo shades I like best… sad? yes! Inevitable? unfortunately!

Use trailing chrysanthemum wallpaper for an elegant feature wall… although it might distract me from ANY form of work!

Beautiful bathroom design – pure and SIMPLE

    by  • July 22, 2010 • Bathroom bliss • 2 Comments

I love love LOVE this cool, calm and collected bathroom decorating look. It’s all about neutral walls, wooden accessories and lightweight towels and robes for a spot summery relaxation in the tub!

The key to a country bathroom is a classic roll-top – place a screen nearby for a decorative touch!

I love the white-painted panelled walls. You could also layer a loosely woven voile fabric over an everyday plastic shower curtain to stop stray water spray – it looks stunning, too. Tie shells to the bottom for a pretty trim.

A teak basin adds warmth and a contemporary feel when fitted on to a classic console table. Arrange beauty buys and lotions on a wooden tray.

'The Kitchen I Envy' by Magnet's Alison Coleman

    by  • July 22, 2010 • Cool kitchens • 0 Comments

Looking to update your kitchen? See what designs inspire the experts! We asked Magnet’s kitchen guru, Alison Coleman

“Having worked in the kitchen industry for eight years, I can’t help but have a healthy curiosity for other people’s homes and in particular their kitchens. In fact, I can’t go to a friend’s house without taking a sneak peak at their worktop, or stealing a glance a their kitchen units.

Over the years kitchen trends have come and gone. I’ve seen some pretty ghastly things in my time such as corked walls and the era of TV inspired DIY kitchens during the 90s produced some pretty horrific results.

Last year we installed a kitchen in a home that featured a mix of Caldo Walnut and Urban Noir units. It looks stunning – the dark gloss really complement the wood and overall effect looks really exclusive. The black granite worktop is so sleek, I love the way it blends seamlessly in to the hob and the slate look floor really compliments the dark gloss units.

It’s a really great example of how you can customise a kitchen by mixing different styles and units in one space.

    Garden updates

    by  • July 19, 2010 • Best of the rest • 1 Comment

After spending an afternoon eating too much barbecue food on the terrace of a swanky flat overlooking the Thames, I decided THAT’S IT! I may never be able to afford even a room of one of those flats, but by GUM, will I make the most of what I’ve got!

I’ve been searching for easy garden updates and I love these cute high-impact, low-effort ideas. So by the end of the summer, I hope my outdoor space will have at least two out of three of these things.

    1) An amazing alfresco dining table, with colourful glassware and chunky crockery!

    2) A mini herb garden! I like the idea of a chalkboard in the garden too – ideal for listing your garden ‘to do’s or for games with friends and family.

    3) A country swing! No mean feat on a roof terrace I assure you … maybe I’ll just hang it over the stairwell!

    Decorating with science

by  • July 19, 2010 • Beautiful boudoirs, Best of the rest, Desirable dining, Stylish living • 1 Comment

I have happily spent the last decade living without words like ‘acids and alkalis’, ‘geometry’ and ‘right angles’ (I presume my old science teachers would have hoped I wouldn’t either) but then when I saw these chic modern decorating schemes,  and it was all I wanted to talk about.

The latest decorating trend blends lab-inspired design and chemical colours to create an even quirkier take on utility chic. What do you think? Too clinical?

A 3-D installation takes a bedroom focal point to the next direction…

I love the suspended planters here, they look fantastic with the funky crooked-leg table.

Friday's Fetish: Decorating palm spring style

by  • July 16, 2010 • Beautiful boudoirs, Desirable dining, Stylish living • 3 Comments

Anyone seen the latest issue of Livingetc? Mine landed firmly on my desk this morning, and what a lovely flash of present day (it’s Christmas press show season!) decorating inspiration it was … well, almost was…

Check out these 1950s Palm Springs-inspired decorating schemes. Packed with the vibrancy and glamour you’d associate with Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra‘s weekend oasis/playground! I can safely say I won’t be going for this look in my home BUT I do love them in a ‘I want every day to bright and party-filled’ kind of way! Definitely inspiring for modern decorating lovers!

For grown-up glam, use flashes of feather-boa pink set against a white background…

Create a sun-soaked, upbeat space with geometric yellow bands. Tip – offsetting the stripes creates an op-art version of glinting sun, while gradually widening them opens up the room at head height!

Bathroom design ideas – the good, the bad and the ugly!

    by  • July 14, 2010 • Bathroom bliss • 3 Comments

Liever is becoming one of my favourite places to browse the latest quirky bathroom designs (it’s great for other rooms, too!) Fit-a-family baths, strange-but-true cabinetry, out-of this-wolrld furnishings, the works!

I’ve had a lil browse for bathroom designs this morning – anything to balance my kitchen craze at the moment – and found some fantastic designs … and some questionable ones …

    The good

I mean, I could fit my HOUSE in that bath, plus those oversized spa-style pebbles could rival Stonehenge!

    roomenvy - hotel-chic bathroom

    The bad

Note, I am NOT complaining about the setting (at ALL!) it’s just that the units are a bit modern and clinical for me.

    The ugly

I do love a bathroom chandelier, but I’d just feel uncomfortable with minions serving me grapes – oh? Is that not a prerequisite of this kind of scheme?

    Feature wallpaper goes cuckoo!

    by  • July 13, 2010 • Beautiful boudoirs • 4 Comments

Woah! Slow down feature wallpaper, I only asked what your name was!! I love a funky feature wallpaper, and I love the bird trend – especially when it’s incorporated in a summery bedroom design idea, but this is too much for me.

Maybe it’s the combination of the feature wallpaper AND the screen upholstered in exactly the same pattern? Or maybe it’s the fact that a room full of swans isn’t my idea of relaxation? (as much as I love Osborn & Little designs in general) But I just think it’s too much – what do you guys think? Am I being harsh?
